What is PETG?
PETG is the recyclable cousin of PET (water bottles), modified with glycol for easier 3D printing. Tougher than PLA, more chemical resistant, food safe in most formulations, and naturally UV resistant. Trades easy printing for slightly fussier first layers and more aggressive stringing if retraction isn't dialed in.
Best for
- Outdoor parts (UV resistant, won't yellow)
- Food-contact applications (most PETG is FDA-grade)
- Mechanical parts under moderate load
- Watertight enclosures (better layer adhesion than PLA)
- Bottle holders, planters, garden hardware
- Translucent / clear aesthetic prints
Avoid for
- Fine miniatures (stringing risk on small features)
- Glossy finish requirements (PETG is naturally semi-gloss only)
- Snap-fit assemblies (it's flexier than PLA, fits loosen)
- Sub-zero outdoor parts (gets brittle below ~-10°C)
Printing tips
- Bed adhesion: PEI works perfectly; on glass, use a thin glue stick layer to prevent damage on removal
- Retraction tuning is critical — start at 1-2 mm direct drive, 5 mm bowden, increase if stringing
- Reduce part cooling fan to 30-50% for better layer adhesion (vs 100% for PLA)
- Print speed 60-150 mm/s — slower than PLA for cleaner layers
- Dry the spool to <15% humidity if it's been open more than 2 weeks (PETG is hygroscopic)

PETG runs $24-30/kg mid-tier in 2026, ~15-20% over equivalent PLA. Hatchbox PETG at $25/kg, Bambu PETG-HF at $28, Prusament PETG at $32. Plus the higher failure rate (×1.5 PLA baseline) means real per-part cost is 25-35% above the PLA equivalent on the same printer. Charge customers a +15-20% upcharge over PLA pricing to recover this.
