What is PETG-CF?
PETG-CF is regular PETG infused with chopped carbon fiber pellets (typically 15-20% by weight). The fibers reinforce the polymer matrix, dramatically increasing stiffness and dimensional stability while reducing warp. Excellent for engineering prototypes that need 'looks like injection molded' surface finish without the cost of molding.
Best for
- Drone frames, RC parts (lightweight + stiff)
- Tool jigs and fixtures
- Functional brackets requiring dimensional stability
- Prototypes that need to survive field testing
- Parts with visible technical aesthetic (matte black with fiber sparkle)
Avoid for
- Fine detail miniatures (carbon fiber blurs small features)
- Food contact (not FDA-grade once carbon-loaded)
- Parts requiring color other than black/dark grey
- Glossy / smooth finish requirements
- Brass-nozzle printers (CF erodes them in 100-200 g of printing)
Printing tips
- Hardened steel nozzle is mandatory — Bambu hardened nozzle ($25), Bondtech CHT hardened, or E3D ObXidian
- Print temp 250-260°C nominal for best layer adhesion
- Bed temp 70-80°C with PEI textured for grip
- Print speed 60-120 mm/s — carbon fiber is faster than pure PETG
- Drying is essential — PETG-CF is more hygroscopic than plain PETG
- Reduce part cooling to 20-40% for layer adhesion in load-bearing parts
Cost notes
PETG-CF runs $40-60/kg in 2026. Bambu PETG-CF at $48, Polymaker CoPA-CF at $55, Prusament PETG-CF at $58. Plus the hardened nozzle ($25) amortizes across ~1 kg before replacement. Real per-part material cost is 2-2.5× equivalent PLA. Charge customers +60-80% over PLA pricing for this material — premium engineering pricing matches the material cost reality.
